How to Choose the Right Ski Resort

Planning a ski vacation can seem very overwhelming at first. With thousands of resorts to choose from in different states and countries the first thing to decide on is location.

If you are planning a trip outside of the United States, some of the top rated ski resorts are in Italy, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Norway, and Sweden. If you are traveling within the US, some of the best family ski resorts can be found in Colorado, Utah, and Vermont.

Figure out if your budget allows for plane tickets, or if you will be driving. Consider how far the resort would be from the airport and if it is worth being jet lagged for a day if the trip requires flying long distances. Keep in mind that if the destination is not too far, driving can save a lot of money that can be put toward resort activities.

When choosing a ski resort, consider who is going on this vacation. If it's a large group with children, choose a resort that has activities geared toward younger people. Indoor pools and child care centers for younger ones may also be at the top of the list. Make sure the mountain has beginner trails and lessons, and explore all of the available activities. Many resorts offer fantastic off mountain activities such as cross country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobile riding, hiking tours, ice skating, and even heli-skiing. Ask the group what they would like to do before picking a resort. This will help narrow down resort choices.

Find out if the people going on vacation ski, snowboard, or both. Although most resorts allow both, some resorts have "ski only" areas or parks. Skiers may prefer a certain type of mountain terrain and snowboarders may prefer another. For the more experienced skiers and riders, type of snow and terrain can play a huge factor. If groomed trails and parks are preferred, one resort may be better than another. Find a mountain that offers trails the whole group can enjoy.

Be willing to pay a higher price for accommodations that are convenient. Slope side accommodations allow vacationers to step out onto the mountain and ski down the hill without having to drive to the slopes. The farther the hotel or bed and breakfast is from the mountain, the lower the lodging fees will be. If you plan to stay in or around town, find out about transportation between the resort and the mountain. Most ski resorts offer transportation services for free.

Once you have answered a few key questions starting with location, slopes, snow, accommodations, and activities it should be easy to narrow down choices.
