Jackson Hole - Wall to Wall, Top to Bottom!

In an unprecedented move, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort announced the wall-to-wall, top to bottom opening of the mountain, on November 27th. Never before in recorded history has Jackson Hole Mountain Resort had so much snow this early, with totals tipping the 212” mark. We call it Snowvember, and now we are nearing the end of Deepcember.  This years Christmas list: 12 of 12 lifts open, CHECK, 116 of 116 trails open, CHECK, 39 groomed trails, CHECK, season snowfall total of 212”, CHECK, and a base depth of 77”, CHECK.

It has been a whirlwind of a week here at Jackson Hole!  Between the frenzy of holiday preparations and the blizzard of snowfall, we feel as if we are living inside a snow globe.  Today, the glitter and the glitz has finally settled - for a moment - as skies cleared the way for Santa and his reindeer tonight.  With today's perfect conditions, Santa will not be the only one with rosy red cheeks.

After skiing, the fun does not end.  Après-ski is just getting started. There are plenty of places to eat, drink, and relax in mountain village, Mangy Moose, is the rowdiest of them all and one of the locals favorite.  From saddle bar stools to wine bars, Jackson Hole has something for everyone.

Then comes the dinning. Jackson has a remarkably diverse assemblage restaurants, from coffee and breakfast shops to simple family-style cooking to the big game steakhouses.  There is something to satisfy everyone’s pallet.

Just a short, scenic 12 miles down the road from the mountain is the town of Jackson. With free shuttle service through out the town, it makes the exciting nightlife, easily accessible and safe to partake in until the wee hours of the night.  Make sure you check the Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce for listings of all the events going on this winter.

Don’t forget to sign up for the resort’s Vertical Foot Club which lets out-of-town skiers (locals are not eligible) track their cumulative runs, awarding certificates and belt buckles at specific milestones. You can also earn a free day of skiing for your next visit. Sign up at the Guest Service Center at the base area.

Christmas Week in Summit County
The Season has kicked off extremely strong here in Summit County. With the help of our Snow God Ullr, Breckenridge has seen snow falling several times each week, leaving the season total at 193 inches as of December 21, 2010 with a Base Depth of 61 inches. With such significant amounts of snow, Breckenridge Ski Resort has 28 of 31 lifts open and 149 of 155 runs open.

The Dew Tour just wrapped up here in Breckenridge and we are expecting to see both the Freeway and Park Lane terrain parks to be re-built this week. Breckenridge is known to have one of the most prestigious parks in the World.

The snow will continue to fall here in Summit County, which will make conditions even better for travelers to the area for the Christmas break. When the snow is deep make sure to find your way up the highest chair in North America and drop into Imperial Bowl or hike up to the Lake Chutes where you can find a large cornice and a steep pitch of 55 degrees.

Make sure you check out Epic Mix! You and your friends can compare your vertical feet skied each day and see who took the most extreme runs of the day.

After a long day on the slopes, make sure to hit the town! You will find the nightlife to be electrifying! There are many great bars lining both sides of Main Street making it easy to find a place where everyone can have a good time. Are you in the mood for music? Make sure to check out the calendar for a list of events going on at three20south.

Summit County also offers three other great mountains all within 30 minutes of Breckenridge. Arapahoe Basin has a new high speed quad at the base of the mountain getting you to mid- mountain in only a few minutes. Neighboring Arapahoe Basin is Keystone home of A-51 terrain park, another one of the best parks in the World. Make sure your kids check out Kidtopia happening each month at Keystone. The Ultimate Snow Fort is located at the top of Dercum Mountain. It will be open for the kids to dance to live music, make arts and crafts, and go disco tubing. Check out the calendar here for dates.

Copper Mountain has a great New Year’s party with a bonfire, fire dancers, glow sticks and more. Wrap the evening up with the traditional New Year’s torchlight parade followed by a Fireworks display over the Mountain.

The snow will only get better as the season continues so make sure to get out on the mountain and see what the buzz is about in Breckenridge!

Small Town, Big Impact

There’s something to be said about small towns and big communities.  With a population not quite at 13,000, Steamboat Springs, CO reflects this in a huge way, as its impact is felt throughout Routte County.  You feel it as you walk down Lincoln Avenue and notice the bustling local businesses. You feel it as you talk to a local who is dirt broke, but still managed to buy mittens for a local charity.  You see it in the number of turkeys that were dropped off at the community center on Thanksgiving.  As you walk into the Steamboat Chamber, you know right away that Steamboat may be a little town, but it surely has a huge heart.

The Steamboat Chamber of Commerce itself is quite the gem.  As a tourist or someone new in town, you can stroll in and feel immediately taken care of.  But beyond the marketing and advertisement geared towards tourists, the chamber also offers new businesses in town the opportunity to become involved with the Steamboat community.  With committees available such as the Philanthropist Committee and Young Professionals Network, the chamber helps propel these driven individuals throughout the year, involving them with a number of charitable organizations.

From the more nationally known organizations like the United Way and the Humane Society, down to the local ones like Rex’s Holiday Wishes and Lift Up, Steamboat is in constant movement.  There will always be those less fortunate, no matter where you live.  But in Steamboat it’s in the back of nearly everyone’s mind and the effect is huge.

To start off with, the United Way brings the community together with the largest Thanksgiving dinner you will ever see, feeding families who are not only unable to financially put a turkey on their table, but also for those locals who are without family.  As the United Way organizes this huge event, it’s actually the community itself that prepares and donates all the food.  Locals helping locals. It’s truly an amazing event.

Opening day of the ski season brings another charitable notion to the table. Season passes are not valid on opening day and the reason why is because all the proceeds of tickets go towards Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club.  This organization is what funds less fortunate kids on the mountain.  They make sure that every child has the opportunity to strap on some skis and give the winter sports a shot.

Through all the love poured into helping those less fortunate, the community itself is tightened.  There’s a sense of security knowing that we all are doing our best to look out for each other. Of course it’s the easiest time of year to keep that in mind, simply because of the holidays, but its important to Steamboat to keep it going all year.  Because that’s what Steamboat is all about. A constant sense of caring.
