Shred like a Local: Five Tips from Those in the Know

Ski or Snowboard like a local at the following five resorts serviced by Ski Butlers — from Colorado to Canada — thanks to these insider tips.

Beaver Creek, Colorado

A blue bird day in the early morning after a large snowfall is obviously quite perfect! However, I enjoy being out there when the snow is coming down hard because it keeps most people off the mountain and the tracks get filled in quickly with fresh snow. The Stone Creek Chutes at Beaver Creek have some terrific tree skiing and if you can ski or ride there on a powder day, it’s paradise.

Snowbasin, Utah

Give up my favorite Utah resort? Wha?! Anyone who knows me knows I am at Snowbasin on a storm day. When I see one coming I wait until I see the snow stake. Then I set my alarm for very, very early. If it looks like it’s a go the next morning, I try to give myself enough time so I am booting up by 8 a.m. and one of the first in line.

Steamboat Springs, Colorado

I absolutely love bombing down Westside or Rolex on a groomer day or hitting up Tee-Pee Trees or Weasel Trees on a powder day. There’s something meditative about tree skiing in steamboat, that’s for sure.

Squaw Valley, California

My favorite weather forecast is 25 degrees and 26”-38” of fluffy snow. What’s my favorite run? As a skier, this question gives me hives because it’s impossible to narrow it down. If I had to pick, it would be Red Dog Ridge off of KT-22 at Squaw. I could lap that all day.

Whistler/Blackcomb

Blackcomb is my choice on a powder day. The lift lines can be smaller on the Blackcomb side and there is great terrain like Spankies Ladder, which is my favorite zone to ski. You have to be tactical when avoiding the crowds so I either get up at the crack of dawn and I’m the first one on the chair, or I accept that I won’t get fresh tracks, but instead of lift lines, I head up in the afternoon when everyone is nestled away in the lodge with tired legs from shredding all morning.
