Top 3 Fall Bike Rides in Aspen

Fall is my favorite time of the year, we get to reflect on the amazing summer we’ve had and lose ourselves in the anticipation for winter. Oh, and the leaves change colors and it looks AMAZING!!! Town is quiet, the weather is playful and it’s a brief moment before we begin meeting guests with their ski rentals in Aspen and Snowmass. One of the best ways to enjoy the colors is on a bike, and here is 3 amazing rides for all ability levels.

Owl Creek Trail — COMFORT BIKE - 1hr 30 min from Snowmass Base Village to Aspen Core. This trail is an intermediate/moderate trail simply because there is a bit of climbing involved. It is well worth it as the trail heads from Aspen to Snowmass, passing large open fields that are filled with dozens of horses year round. In the fall the fields are filled with large herds of Elk, with occasionally upwards of 100 elk casually hanging out in these fields. There are few better places to see the colors than Owl Creek Road, on a bike it’s even better as you can stop and take your time.

Hunter Creek Trail - MOUNTAIN BIKE — 1 to 2 hours from BLM Parking Lot. This trail affords easy to moderate singletrack riding through meadows and Aspen forests, that are exponentially more beautiful as the leaves change in the fall. You will ride through old mining remnants, around large granite boulders that will boggle the mind as to how they got there. This is also a popular hiking trail but you can cover more ground more quickly on a bike. There are miles of trails that connect to the Hunter Creek Trail, check out the posted maps to link trails together.

Castle Creek Road — COMFORT OR MOUNTAIN BIKE — 1 Hour or more. The best views are from the Ghost town in Ashcroft proper. The road, a paved County road, quiets down and has minimal traffic at this point. It is doable to bike from Aspen to the Ghost town but for a leisurely outing parking near Ashcroft will afford beautiful views and easy biking. Journey on past the Ghost town towards Pine Creek Cookhouse for lunch or a drink on the deck.

Aspen and Snowmass are known for their skiing and riding, and we are known for our Aspen ski rentals and Snowmass ski rentals. But like most things, there is more than meets the eye. So be sure to include Aspen in the Fall to your travel plans. Get yourself a bike rental instead of a ski rental this time and enjoy the scenery from a different perspective.
